Bird&Blend

  • The Brand

Starting from a napkin in a Canadian pub and growing to over 17 stores with 200 staff. Focussing on environmental responsibility and delivering over 200 high quality teas. Capitalising on the surge in speciality teas and wanting to branch out to more products to promote in store.

  • The Brief

“Explore how Bird&Blend might use a physical interaction with an object to optimise or enhance ‘personal nourishment’ that blends in seamlessly with tea drinking”

    .

  • The Core Problem

Tea is enjoyed in unique variations with some people liking it stronger or weaker with different flavours. The complexity of loose leaf tea meant that these delicate flavours when over brewed or under brewed gave poor final results in comparison to the samples given out in store.

  • Finding a Tea

When defining what ‘personal nourishment’ is I found the most apt description to be; ‘self-imposed positive action which leads to a better form of life’. Fitness has seen proven to improve personal nourishment and well-being. Researching the different types of tea, I found green tea to be the most suitable for my project.

  • Experimenting

It was established that it was important that the tea could be drank cold opposed to being hot like most teas. Therefore, the rates of diffusion at different temperatures of the teas needed to be studied to ensure Bird&Blends green tea blends could be drank cold to the perfect level of brewing. This testing proved that the teas would diffuse at an acceptable rate whilst cold.

  • Validating the Idea

It was vital that the customer base (physically active people) enjoyed the taste of green tea whilst exercising. Using the persona of a Bird&Blend consumer displayed the best sports to test on would be run and spin enthusiasts. Attending sponsored run clubs and spin classes validated this is something the consumer wanted.

The Solution

Clean and simple design to work with as many different bottle types and people preferences

Stanardised bottle thread to repurpose old bottles

Diffusion blocker to stop diffusion when turned over diffuser

Turning nozzle for hands free operation

Stainless steel diffusing element

Half straw design so user is always drinking away from diffusing element
